This course is designed for humanitarian aid workers, diplomats and peacekeepers in the field, focusing on real situations in conflict zones. The proposed activities, discussions and case studies will be carried out as if the participants were in a fictional country, Carana, which the UN itself uses for its internal training.
The professor who will teach the classes was responsible for the course on Protection of Civilians in Peacekeeping Operations, developed for the United Nations.
Diplomats, lawyers, military and police officers who may serve in UN missions, as well as anyone interested in pursuing a career in the field. It will also be of interest to postgraduate students and entry-level professionals seeking opportunities in UN humanitarian agencies or human rights NGOs.
The course will be taught in English, and it will be necessary to have knowledge of the language to follow the classes.

The course will consist of a mix of lectures, interactive exercises and skills-based activities. This will include a series of scenario-based activities and simulations that provide a realistic introduction to the challenges participants are likely to face in the field. Participants will receive a mix of PowerPoint presentations lasting approximately one to one and a half hours, and exercises and interactives lasting two to three hours each.
The course aims to present an overview of Public International Law. With this, it aims to provide an understanding of the principles and rules that govern international relations, allowing the student to know them and understand how their interactions with other international actors occur. Classes will consist of a mix of plenary discussions and interactive activities that will situate the debate on conflict, prevention and protection within an international legal framework. By the end of the course, participants should have a good basic understanding of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and human rights.
Students who satisfactorily meet the attendance and performance requirements will be entitled to a certificate.
